Industrial designs

An industrial design protects the appearance of a product, its shape, lines, colors, or texture. We arrange the registration of your design in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, throughout the European Union, and internationally.

What we handle for you

Searches and advice

We check the novelty and individual character of your design and recommend a suitable scope of protection.

Registration in the Czech Republic and Slovakia

We file the industrial design application with the Industrial Property Office (ÚPV) and conduct the proceedings through to registration.

Registered EU design (RCD)

With a single application at the EUIPO, you obtain unified protection for the appearance of your product across all European Union member states.

International registration

Through the Hague System (WIPO), we extend the protection of your design to additional countries.

Unregistered EU design

We also advise on protection through an unregistered design, which protects a new design for a period of three years without the need for registration.

Renewals and defense

We watch deadlines, arrange renewals, and help defend your design against imitations.

What is an EU industrial design

An industrial design protects the appearance of a product or part of it, in particular the shape, lines, contours, colors, material texture, or ornamentation. The registered European Union design, formerly known as the Community design (RCD), makes it possible with a single application at the EUIPO to protect a design across the entire territory of the European Union.

The advantage is unified protection. With a single application you cover all EU member states at once, and the right of priority can also be claimed. Before filing, you have a 12-month deferment period during which the product can be placed on the market without impairing its novelty.

A design can be protected in two forms. An unregistered EU design arises automatically on the day of first disclosure to the public, lasts three years, and protects against intentional copying. A registered design is entered in the EUIPO register and also protects against an independently developed similar product.

A registered design is valid for five years and can be renewed repeatedly up to a total of 25 years from the filing date. It gives the owner the right to prohibit the unauthorized manufacture and sale of an identical product in the EU and to prevent the import of such goods through the customs authorities. For protection outside the EU, international registration through the Hague System (WIPO) can be used.

Frequently asked questions

It protects the appearance of a product or part of it: the shape, lines, contours, colors, or texture. It does not protect a technical solution. That can be protected by a patent or a utility model.

Registration is significantly faster than for a patent. A registered EU design at the EUIPO is usually registered within days to weeks after a flawless filing. The course depends on the completeness of the application and the quality of the representations.

For an EU design, you have a 12-month deferment period. During it, you can place the product on the market without impairing its novelty. We do, however, recommend not delaying the application.

Yes. A multiple (combined) application allows an entire collection of designs to be registered at once on favorable terms. This is well suited to a product line or variants of a single product.

An unregistered EU design arises automatically upon disclosure, lasts three years, and protects against copying. A registered design provides stronger and longer protection, including against an independently created similar design.
